Don't put it off!

Lady Mocs 70, UNC Greensboro 53 (that's how we spent our afternoon - at least after getting haircuts)

Jean's friend, Kay, had a terrible scare today. She had had a routine mammogram a couple of days ago - and got a call to come back in immediately for additional films. What a great relief when the ultrasound showed only a small calcification. She's to go back in six weeks for new films, but at least she's breathing easier tonight.

Ladies, GET THOSE MAMMOGRAMS!!!! And guys, urge your mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, loved ones to do the same. Don't put it off!!!!

We watched an old program on PBS tonight - The Glenn Miller Spectacular. Or rather, we listened to it. We do love that music.

Remember, early diagnosis is the key!

A Photo Shoot??

Today was the day that I was to meet the photographer who was to take my picture for the article scheduled to be on the art page of the Sunday paper. This will be next month around the time my show starts. The editor of the art page has been terrific about the publicity.

The photo shoot (doesn't that sound professional???) was fun. The young photographer is just finishing a 6-month internship at the paper, taken while a student at the University of Montana. He worked for about an hour, taking an amazing number of pictures. I surely am glad they were only pixels, and can be deleted. He was very kind and chatty, putting me completely at ease. I hope he got at least one or two that will work.

Later this afternoon, UPS delivered our toy present to ourselves. It's called the Dancing Helix, and it is SO cool. I had first seen this in our doctor's office, and John finally found it on the internet and we promptly ordered one.

And, today was another one of those days when I was in the paper - but this time on the comic page. Here's today's "Family Circus". That's generally the way I paint.

Sushi

I did head to the doctor's office this morning. I saw the PA, and he agreed that I did have a urinary tract infection, and that I had been treating it appropriately. He thought that my back pain was a muscular pain, rather than kidney pain - and I do hope that's the case.

In any case, I went on to the grand and glorious Walmart. It's just a Monday thing - but since I had skipped last Monday, it was really necessary today. Bridge was fun, as always. I had good and bad rounds, and a couple of really challenging hands.

We got home to find a message from John & Sylvia on the phone. They had been given a $50.00 gift certificate to a downtown sushi bar. It had to be used by 31 December, and they asked if we would like to join them to help use it up. None of us had ever been to a sushi place before - but hey! it's free food. What time should we be be there?!

We looked at the menu, which wasn't much help. When we asked the waitress for help, she called the chef (owner?) over to tell us about the various items. We finally asked him to just prepare a dinner for four for the amount of the gift certificate. Let me tell you - this was truly a magnificant meal! The chef presented us with five different types of sushi. What a feast for the eyes and the palate! I have no way to tell you what was in each of these morsels, but each was a group of different subtle flavors with beautiful colors and textures. The more familiar "hot" dishes that followed (chicken fried rice, egg rolls, and pot stickers) were almost anticlimactic. This is certainly a place we will visit again - and our probable order would be to ask the chef to prepare his choices for us, within a specific dollar amount. Thanks again for including us, J&S.

Today's photo is a Google image of a plate of sushi.

A Sleepy Sunday

We were still pretty much in catch-up mode today, but we'll get back to some semblance of normal tomorrow. We even have a basketball game on Wednesday. The laundry got done, and we had a pizza for supper - what could be more normal?

I am going to the doctor first thing in the morning to check in about this urinary tract infection. After having had only 1-2 during my whole life, it's pretty unusual to have two in a year's time. Oh, joy!

Today's photos are from our trip to the Aquarium - sometimes even the grown-ups have to try everything!

The day after...

For a day that was supposed to be a do-nothing day, it didn't quite work out that way. Well, it mostly did for me, but John wound up doing his least favorite thing - plumbing. He replaced the flush mechanism in the toilet, and, of course, nothing worked quite right. He did get it working, though.

I got started on the catch-up laundry, but that was about all my accomplishments for the day.

Today's photo is the waterfall in the Cove Forest section of the Tennessee Aquarium.

The back side of a holiday

The house is so quiet! There's always such a void when everybody leaves after a holiday. We got Allan to the airport, where he sat for a 2-hour late plane. He finally has arrived at home. We've finished up almost all of the leftovers. And now, all we have to do is figure out what day of the week it is. Have you noticed that you completely lose the day of the week when people are coming and going and you get out of your routine?

We won't have much time to get back into a routine. Of course, there's another holiday next week, and then we'll be heading off to Texas for a few days. But then, we'll be getting into our usual basketball routine.

Today's photo was the Astronomy Picture of the Day on 22 December 2008, titled "Labtayt Sulci on Saturn's Enceladus". I don't know anything about astronomy, so don't really understand that. But it's a stunning photograph, and I wanted to share.

Holiday times

This has been a great holiday season for us. We've gotten to spend so much time with family and friends, talking and eating and sharing ideas and experiences. It just doesn't get any better than this! We even got to talk to Jesse while we were at Margaret's today.

Here are some photos of our folks and our festivities.

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays! Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Eid - whatever. I hope everyone enjoys being with friends and family, with good food and fellowship. We've had lots of both family and friends this year - and it's been quite special. We just miss having Jesse with us and send lots of hugs to him in Iraq.

Today's photo is from Astronomy Picture of the Day - a photo of earth rise by the Apollo 8 astronauts in December 1968.

A more normal Tuesday

We had some sunshine today, but it was still pretty cold - high was only 43. Tomorrow we get rain, and warmer.

Today was a bit more "normal". I took the new painting and the percentage check to the Civic Center first thing, and then headed for the Gallery. We had some folks come in, a couple of students and some tourist lookers. It's SO terrific to be in an area where people just drop in to look around. They've been at the Choo Choo, and have the gallery map in hand - even in this cold weather, just looking. This is what we've hoped for.

I got a call this afternoon from the art editor at the newspaper to set up the information questions for the article about my show, and set a time to meet the photographer at the Gallery to take the photo for the paper. The editor has been a terrific help - covering the Gallery and the various artists. Recognition and awareness is what it takes, and this publicity can't be beat.

Allan's been busy helping his clients, meeting with contacts here - hoping to get and keep the connections to help him when he gets ready to move back to Chattanooga. It can't come soon enough to suit us.

Today's photo is a leafy sea dragon who lives in the Sea Horse exhibit at the Tennessee Aquarium.

Weekend recap

It's been really busy this weekend. And really great, too. The food was fantastic, and being with friends and family was even better.

Yesterday, we had breakfast casserole, cheese grits, bacon, sausage, fruit, rolls, jellies, all the condiments, sweets, cheeses, chili con queso. Christmas cookies, nuts, coffee, tea, etc., etc. We were truly fortunate with a "groaning board".

Allan got here about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, but we were up and moving by 7 or 8. Sue and her family came in from the motel, and the group here was up and cooking. Friends started to come in - Dalton and Donnie, John and Sylvia, Judy and Hunter. Joe had to head off to his family Xmas at noon, then Sue, Randy, and Alison left about 1. Kate left shortly after that.

It was a non-stop talk/eating fest - around the table, in the living room, checking on the basketball game (Lady Vols 79, Stanford 69 in overtime). John got back from the basketball game a little after 11. We've put in some very long days with a minimum of sleep.

Margaret and Sarah were heading back from Texas, and got caught in a series of delayed flights. They finally got to their respective destinations by 1 or 2 a.m. this morning.

I did skip swimming this morning (shame on me!), but sleeping until 7:30 surely did feel good. Allan had a couple of appointments, so he was gone all morning. Jean left right after lunch, and John and I headed off to play bridge. There was one extra player, so he went back home to visit with Allan. Bridge was good. I was HIGH last week!!!!! And had some pretty good cards today, too. But even better was that one of the regular bridge players bought one of my paintings in the Tennessee Watercolor Society exhibit at the Civic Center. That was terrific. I think that's the only one in the show that's sold, so far. I have another painting to put up tomorrow.

I don't have a picture of the painting, but this photo is of the original building of the Hunter Museum of American Art. It had been gray and cloudy, but when we came out the sun was shining, and I was able to get this great photo.

A trifecta! Family, Friends, Food

It's way too late tonight to write. I'll get caught up tomorrow. Thanks for checking in.

The Winter Solstice

We've had a great time with all the folks here today. John and Randy (Sue's husband) stayed at home with Jean's dog, Spencer. The rest of us went to the Hunter Museum of American Art. Alison and Joe walked on the Walnut Street Bridge, while the rest of us (Sue, Kate, Jean, and I) drove down to the Aquarium. A&J met us there, and we went through both buildings. Of course, this is A's territory. She just loves her underwater stuff. And the Aquarium is a terrific facility, and she wanted to show it off to Joe.

Then I took them out to see the new Gallery, and to visit for a bit with Vicki, and see her new house. We finally got home about 3.

We had a great dinner - filets (John cooked), baked potatoes, green beans, salad. Kate had brought a new word game, Apples to Apples. We played that after supper - a fun game for a bunch of people - easy and full of laughs. Allan's had plane delays (of course) and will be getting here about 2:30 a.m. He finally decided to take the van shuttle from Atlanta.

We've had rain off and on again all Saturday, with a high around midnight about 63 degrees. That's also going to be high for Sunday, as a cold front is coming through, and the temps are expected to fall all day long. It should be feeling much more like wintertime.

Appropriate for the Winter Solstice - the shortest day of the year. This photo is from the Astronomy Picture of the Day, and is of a winter solstice at the megalithic tomb at Newgrange in County Meath, Ireland.

Lady Mocs 75, San Francisco 52

Sorry folks, you'll just have to put up with the basketball team scores.

It's late and it's been a busy, fun day. Our swimming group Xmas party had to be postponed by a death in the family of our hostess. We met at Panera Bread after class, as usual, but with more in the bunch than usual. This is such a great group of people, and we do enjoy our times together (even the exercise part). I went to the shop, and then headed home early for more cooking.

Jean got here about 2 - a relatively uneventful drive for her. We went to the airport to pick up Alison and Joe. They had a long, but uneventful travel day. Each leg of their flight landed a bit early, and the checked bag arrived at the same time. It's great to have them here! Kate got here about 6. She had more traffic and had periods of hard rain and road-spray, but at least got here in good shape.

We took time for some appetizers and some wine before dinner, then ate. Sue and Randy got here about 9, They had eaten, but were able to find room for a ham biscuit. We had a good time visiting - frequently all talking at the same time (gee, imagine that!). Poor Joe - thrown into the middle of all this. He held his own!

We'll be busy tomorrow. Alison has a full agenda of things she want to see and do, so we'll be out seeing what we can accomplish. The weather should be warm and cloudy, so we'll do as much as we can.

Here's an aerial photo of Chattanooga. We plan to see the Aquarium (on the near - south - side of the river, just to the left of center), the Hunter Museum of American Art (just out of the photo on the right side), and walk the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge (the blue bridge on the right).

Lady Vols 81, Old Dominion 76

One more day before the folks start coming in. We've got a pretty good agenda over the next couple of days. But the good thing about this group is that we're always open to something new. That does make it interesting sometimes.

John sliced the ham tonight. Yum! And I took the little pieces, ground them up in the food processory, added some stuff, and made a dip/spread. Double-yum! Nothing like taking something good, and using part of it to make something else good. The fresh fruit got cut up for some lightness.

I do have to make some reference to the Great Shoe-Throwing Event. One of our Thursday lunch bunch commented that it was the first time he had seen Bush lean to the left. And I must share today's efforts from our favorite editorial cartoonists, Bruce Plante and Clay Bennett.

Lady Mocs 70, Elon 51

It was another rainy, gloomy day today. But we got some more cleaning and cooking done. We've even added another party to the mix. Allan is going to come in this weekend to stay for Christmas week. He's got some legal work to do for some folks here. Doesn't matter why - we'll take him anytime for any reason.

Margaret and Sarah are headed for Texas tomorrow. I know they're going to have a great visit with Betsy. We'll be headed that way in a few weeks.

I hope everybody has gotten all their holiday chores done and plans made. We haven't done much in the way of presents or decorations in a long time. What's important to us at this time (and always) is being able to get together with our family, friends, and loved ones. And we have a special place that we're holding for Jesse and hope that he'll be home safe and sound soon.

Clemson 79, Lady Mocs 74 (from Monday night)

We've gotten the country ham cooked today. The taste-testers pronounced it a success. We started the soaking process on Saturday. Now it's all cooked and wrapped and in the fridge, ready for dinner on Friday. I've also gotten the dill-seasoned oyster crackers done, and a squash casserole made. I always try to do as much in advance as possible.

We even got a little more straightening up of stuff that we stockpiled to get out of the way for the cleaning crew. Little by little....

It's been another gloomy, cold, rainy day. There's supposed to be less rain for the rest of the week, but still lots of clouds. I found one of those treatment lights for John to try. They're supposed to help people who have problems who suffer from last of sunshine - Seasonal Affective Disorder. We hope it helps. In the instructions, it does mention that the user should be careful not to overuse. Remember the episode of Northern Exposure when Walt becomes addicted to his treatment-light visor? Think sunshine!

What a great game!

It was Monday all day - amazing how that works. And it rained almost all evening. They're calling for off and on rain all week long. That surely is a change. At least it's not like in Iowa and Kansas with their ice, wind, and subzero temperatures.

This afternoon, we played bridge. If you don't play, or don't care, skip this paragraph. Playing against John on one progression, the first hand I picked up was an wild one.
Clubs: AKQJxxxx
Hearts: A9876
Spades: ---
Diamonds: ----

I opened 1C; John 1 spade; my partner pass; John's partner; 2D. The bidding progressed, and I stayed in, and the final contract was me playing 5 clubs, doubled. My partner had two clubs, K spades, Q diamonds, the 10 of hearts. I can't remember the rest of his cards, but the key card was the 10 of hearts. The hand played like a charm, and I would up losing two heart tricks before setting the others up, plus all the trump tricks. It was SO sweet, and I was definitely doing the Happy Dance!

Stay warm and dry - and pick up good cards!

Texas 73, Lady Vols 59

Today was mostly a standard Sunday. The bad part was that the Lady Vols lost.

Region 3 of the Tennessee Watercolor Society had an opening reception for it show at the Civic Center. It's a good show, and well put together. We had a good crowd, and it was a nice evening. John & Sylvia came by, and then followed us home at the end.

We had the sweet potato/butternut squash soup for supper, with cheeses and pears accompanying. The soup turned out really good - and it's certainly one that I'll make again. If you're interested in that sort of thing, leave a comment. I'll e-mail the recipe to you.

Tonight's photos are of my pieces at the TnWS show, and one of some of the visitors. The photos are pretty bad, with lousy lighting, but might give you a flavor of the evening.

Lady Mocs 82, Wofford 61

This was one of those catch-up days. We stayed home, in sweats, all day. We weren't entirely slugs, though.

John got started on soaking the country ham. He's ecstatic over Margaret's "invention" of using a piece of hose to fill and drain the ham-cooker. It is SO much easier and less messy! I guess we'll be doing the actual cooking on Tuesday.

I got started on some soup and dried-bean cooking. The soup will be a creamy sweet potato/butternut squash soup. I got the recipe from Sian's blog for 8 December 2008. Thanks, Sian, it's really looking good - we'll be having it tomorrow. I also started some dried black beans cooking.

There's been a lot of publicity about the beauty of the current full moon. However, the moon in this spectacular photo from the Astronomy Picture of the Day is of October's gorgeous full moon rising behind Mount Hamilton, east of San Jose, CA.

Clean!

I decided to give us a special treat this year. I had a cleaning service come and do a "spring cleaning". Getting stuff out of corners and up off the floor to get ready about killed us. They sent two young women who worked solidly for 3 1/2 hours. And, after all their work (and a lighter wallet), the house looks ever so much better. And now maybe we can sort through some of the junk that we didn't pitch (and hopefully throw away a lot more).

The pictures aren't particularly artistic, but should be quite startling to our family and anyone else who has been to our house.

Lady Vols 81, MTSU 52

Rain, rain, rain!!! We've gotten 4+ inches of rain since Tuesday evening. It certainly does help our drought situation. We have only an 11" deficit in rainfall for 2008 so far. I'm really not complaining - it wasn't snow. Can you believe they had 3" of SNOW in New Orleans and Baton Rouge?!?! Amazing! It looks now like we're going to miss the white stuff. The rain stopped and the roads dried out before the temperatures dropped.

John and Margaret headed out early for the ballgame in Knoxville, because of the heavy rain. Of course, it wasn't a problem, so they were there way too early. They did get to visit with Matt & Amanda at their apartment, so that was a plus. M&A are going to Atlanta to look at apartments tomorrow. Matt has accepted the job offer he got, and they're excited about starting their new life.

I went to the Photo Society Xmas dinner tonight. It's always fun to see all the great photos that the members take. They're so talented, and always present their best work. The covered dishes brought by the members are always terrific, too. At least the rain had stopped by the time I was heading home.

Anybody who's seen our house would be astounded at the appearance of the computer room. The cleaning crew comes tomorrow, and we needed to get some space and floor for them to clean. The "stuff" still has to be gone through, but we've sent gobs of stuff to the garbage and to recycle - and will probably send lots more. But this much had to be done before the cleaning crew got here. I'll get a photo tomorrow.

This photo from one of our TV stations shows what Chattanooga looks like after this type of rain.

Raining and cleaning

It rained all night long - probably about 2" around here. Before it got light, a large branch broke off one of the backyard trees. It made a big thud, and took out the wire holding the birdfeeders. Unfortunately they were all broken. There was thunder, so the pool at the Y was closed about the time of our class. John worked out in the Fitness Center. I stayed home, and started on the computer room. What a chore! It's all but overwhelming, but we're throwing SO Much away!

We went for haircuts, and while John was getting his, I went in to Walmart and bought several more storage boxes. I asked John to load all the photography stuff into the new boxes, while I went back to work in the computer room. Lots of cussing and snarling gone on. Don't we all hate to do this kind of stuff!?!

We did make some good progress, though, and it'll be ready for the Merry Maids on Friday.

It's started raining again - that always makes for some good sleeping. And, we don't have to get up early in the morning!

We didn't have hummingbird feeders on the wire, but these hummers are at feeders at the Barrancas Hotel on the Cooper Canyon trip.

Lady Mocs 82, Furman Lady Paladins 38

This was a long day - but very productive. Teeth cleaning came first, with no problems. I've never minded going to the dentist. Guess it's because I have good teeth, and rarely have any problems.

From there went straight to my 6-month check with the rheumatologist. Even with the cold weather, I'm not too creaky. My problem area for a while has been my hands - uncomfortable and annoying - but not enough to think about an injection or anything special.

It finally did warm up a bit - at least by comparison - and it started raining about 10 p.m. It's supposed to rain all night - should make for some good sleeping.

I stayed at the gallery the rest of the morning and a good part of the afternoon. I even worked on some paintings. I do need to be doing some more painting - maybe this'll get me inspired.

The day ended up with a Friends of the Library Board meeting. I had gotten some KFC for our lunch today, and got enough to take home for supper. "The Colonel" is always a welcome guest for dinner at our house.

Amazing about the governor of Illinois. How stupid! to say that kind of stuff over an open phone line. I know that trying that kind of stuff is stupid by definition, but that almost sets a new standard of lowness and stupidity.

John went to bed early tonight after having gotten his exercise today rearranging leaves. The best part was that the city was in the neighborhood today picking up leaves. John was just in time, so we didn't have leaves piled up along the curb. Yea!

I did find a new TV show that I'll be watching. Leverage (starring Timothy Hutton) on the TNT network, is a confidence-game-caper, with the former thieves fleecing the bad guys, and giving the money to some good cause. I love that sort of story. Check it out! And there's another one on TNT that I've recorded to check out - The Librarian, with Noah Wyle. I caught the tail end of an episode and Bob Newhart was also on it. There may be life on TV yet.

Monday - just a little different

Nothing like an ordinary busy Monday to drop you back in your rut. Swimming, coffee, Wal-Mart, bridge - just the usual.

Well, not exactly. After the drive to Atlanta, my car was really thirsty. With the 3 cent/gallon discount at Wal-Mart, I paid $1.36/gallon to fill it up. That's certainly the lowest in a long time.

And I arranged for my Christmas present today. A representative from Merry Maids came by to give me an estimate on doing a major house-cleaning. I also asked for a cost for once-a-month cleaning after that. This will certainly not be inexpensive, but this something that needs to be done. So we'll bite the bullet and do it. The cleaning crew is coming to spend the day on Friday.

Wow!

A Bridge to Islam

This was a very interesting Elderhostel. I don't know how much new we learned, and we were surprised at how much we already knew. The main impression we got is that Islam is pretty much like any other fundamentalist, revelation-based religion, Christian, Jewish, or any other. It has holy scripture, prophets, rites, predictions of judgement day, etc.

Culturally, one goes without shoes inside the mosque. Maybe we should have been aware of that, but I think Elderhostel should've told people ahead of time about that part of the dress requirements. All the preliminary information said was that if shorts were worn, they should go below the knee. I was not the only one with problems going without the support of shoes - and I have no clue as to what they do about people might come in for such a program wearing sandals without socks. Otherwise the presenters were very informative and candid with their answers to questions, about many subjects, beliefs, rites, culture, family life, etc..

One funny thing - there were no mirrors in the women's rest room. Finally, toward the end of the Q&A, somebody asked about it. It turns out there was no deep theological reason. The facility is brand new - they've only been in a couple of months. There was an irregularity in the wall in the ladies room, and the mirrors couldn't be installed. So they're waiting to get the walls fixed. That got lots of laughs!

A point was made by a speaker that something like 90% of Muslims were opposed to suicide bombers, etc. The question was asked - if that was the case, why weren't they speaking out about it - even shouting condemnation. The answer to that question wasn't too specific. The speaker said Muslims were speaking out, but we just don't hear it. The Koran specifically forbids the taking of innocent life and suicide - so it's against the Koran. But, the speaker was very critical of Muslims (like al Qaeda) who use their "Muslim-ness" to convince the uneducated to do their bidding, i.e., for violence and terrorism.

John added thoughts about spelling differences. We use the Roman alphabet, so when things are translated from the Arabic, it becomes different, i.e., Koran and Qu'ran. He also remembered that one speaker in particular felt that long-time Muslim citizens were unfairly targeted for scrutiny under the Patriot Act - "profiled" if you will - much more so than nonMuslims.

If you have any specific questions about the program, ask me, and we'll try to answer.

Al-Farooq Masjid of Atlanta has been in existence since 1980. It is governed and managed by a Board of Directors. This is a photo I took of the south-facing side of the building.

A long day!

We were on the road at 7 a.m. today. A good day, but I'll have to write about it tomorrow. I'm off to bed!

Friday, December 05, 2008

One step at a time.

One step at a time. I went to swimming group this morning, and got at least a lttle exercise. That, plus a visit to the optometrist to check for macular degeneration (none found - HOORAY!), led to a pretty good nap this afternoon.

And, finally, I arranged for a house cleaning service to come. Someone will come on Monday afternoon to see what's involved and give me a price. Not that it's needed or anything.

Tomorrow will be a long day, but should be interesting. Most of the day will be spent in Atlanta at a 1-day Elderhostel, with Islam as the subject. It's to be held at an Atlanta mosque. As soon as we get back, we'll head to a basketball game. Should be fun!

Our temperatures have been a bunch below normal so far this season. At least we don't have weather like this - photos of recent Iowa snow from google .

A cold and rainy Thursday

The only bright spots in this cold, gray, rainy day were my getting a pedicure and our Thursday lunch.

We're certainly ready for these colds to be completely over, and for us to start feeling good again. And we're definitely ready for some sunshine. We're even starting to snap at each other - most unusual. We'll get over it.

Today's photo is one of John's pictues of a hangglider on (or rather "off") Lookout Moutain.
