Calendars

On the book discussion web site, SeniorLearn, there is a specific discussion on Blue Highways, by William Least Heat-Moon. I’m not reading the book, but am following the discussion and chiming in from time to time about our back-road travels.

When the subject came up about finding places to eat in tiny little towns, I contributed our criteria for meals in small towns. We look for a local eatery on the town square or within a block or so of the square. We also look for a place called “City Café” or “[name of the town] Café”. We tend to order the special of the day or whatever the waitress recommends. Then we enjoy our food and eavesdrop on the conversations between the regulars. That’s frequently even better than the food.

One of the other readers contributed a link to Least Heat-Moon’s comments about a café in Gainesboro, TN. He uses a ranking based on the number of wall calendars displayed. It reads thus:

No calendar: Same as an interstate pit stop.
One calendar: Preprocessed food assembled in New Jersey.
Two calendars: Only if fish trophies present.
Three calendars: Can’t miss on the farm-boy breakfasts.
Four calendars: Try the ho-made pie too.
Five calendars: Keep it under you hat, or they’ll franchise.

And now we have a new marker to look for.
