John had a virus or something on his desktop computer. Anytime he turned it on, he got a popup that says he needed to buy their security protection - and it wouldn't let him do anything else. We tried to do a system restore, but it wouldn't let him do that, either. Admittedly, he had inadvertently let his Norton protection expire, and this bug got it.
One of the SeniorLearn techies suggested that this might be one of the newer malware nasties that is going around. It is called Ransomware.
This afternoon, he got a virus removal and protection program from Staples (easytech), and the cleaning was done over the telephone. The program is good for clearing three computers, so we'll do my laptop, too.
